Listen Up, Arizona: Immigration is a Federal Responsibility
Employers in Arizona are challenging a law passed in 2007 mandating the use of a flawed database system called E-Verify to check on the immigration status of employees. In a recent national newscast on the Spanish-language network Univision, ACLU-NC staff attorney Julia Harumi Mass explains why the Supreme Court should strike down the law.

Privacy Groups to Facebook: It's Not Over Yet
Today the ACLU of Northern California (ACLU-NC) and a lineup of ten of the nation's top privacy groups sent an open letter calling for the social networking giant Facebook to demonstrate commitment to its own principle of user control by addressing several outstanding privacy concerns. Facebook recently took steps to address some privacy problems, but the groups contend more needs to be done. "Despite recent changes, Facebook users' personal information is still visible through privacy cracks most people don't even know about," said Nicole Ozer, ACLU-NC Technology and Civil Liberties Policy Director.

ACLU Lawsuit Spotlights Sonoma County Sheriff and ICE for Unlawful Detentions and Racial Profiling of Latinos
A federal judge issued an order June 11 that an ACLU of Northern California lawsuit charging unlawful collaboration between the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) can move forward. The lawsuit charges that local law enforcement have collaborated unlawfully with ICE to stop and search people who appear to be Latino, interrogate them about their immigration status, and detain them. The Sheriff's Department and ICE have failed to notify these individuals of their rights and the charges against them, among other violations of due process.
