2017 Annual Meeting & Election Event |
The ACLU Sacramento Area Chapter presents
Natasha Minsker, Director of the ACLU of California Center for Advocacy & Policy, and Tanya Faison, founder of Black Lives Matter Sacramento, “Fighting for Police Accountability and Transparency in 2017" California has some of the worst state laws for police accountability and transparency which the ACLU of California continues to fight to change while BLM Sacramento continues fighting for a stronger Sacramento police commission and other types of local reform. Tanya Faison of BLM Sacramento will join the ACLU of California’s Natasha Minsker to talk about fighting for police accountability and transparency at the local and state level. We will also discuss the ACLU’s response to the 2016 national election. Chapters are the ACLU's eyes and ears in our home communities. Take this opportunity to hear about our chapter's advocacy and learn how to become a part of the ACLU’s Sacramento Chapter. When/Where: Saturday, January 14th, 1 pm, Capitol Event Center 1020 11th Street (Downtown Sacramento) |

AB 953 Forum |
Assembly Bill (AB) 953 was signed by Governor Jerry Brown on October 3, 2015! What did it take to get it passed? What does this new law mean for California? Will it curb racial profiling? Will it create a so-called "Ferguson effect"? Join us for an AB 953 panel discussion on these topics and more on November 5, 2015 from 5 pm to 6:20 pm at the Sacramento City College, Davis Extension Center (1720 Jade Street, Davis, CA 95616). There will be plenty of street parking available alongside the Davis Center.
The panel will consist of Chauncee Smith, Legislative Advocate for the ACLU of California; Tim Hunter, Outreach Coordinator for the UC Davis Police Department; Lieutenant Anthony Cucchi of the Woodland Police Department; and members of the Sacramento Area Chapter. |
Die-In to Support AB 953 |
We have all seen the horrifying videos: we know that police stops can turn deadly in the blink of an eye. Unfortunately, California still does not collect or make available information about who the police stops, frisks, or even shoots. AB 953, introduced by Assemblymember Shirley Weber (D-San Diego), would expand and clarify the definition of racial profiling, mandate data collection, and create a review board to analyze data and look for solutions. Simply put, AB 953 will help root out biased policing and restore community trust in police. On September 2, 2015, the ACLU and many other community organizations will hold a rally on the South Lawn of the State Capitol to tell legislators and the Governor that reform is needed. Please join us at 10 am.

KYR with the Police |

Join us at 6:30 pm on July 15, 2015 to learn about your rights with the police and how to conduct yourself in three types of encounters with law enforcement. The location is 2301 John Stills Drive in Sacramento, room 106.

Sacramento Pride Parade |
